Permit Room
Damn good. All day.
- A salute to the permit rooms of Bombay.
- Permit Room is an all-day bar-café serving up delicious breakfasts, seriously good bar snacks, moreish curries, and plates for sharing (all with a selection of signature Dishoom delights). There’s also a knock-out line-up of cocktails to wash it all down with. It is Dishoom’s tribute to the way Bombay kicks back and cuts loose – a salute to the city’s permit rooms, beer bars and drinking holes.
- In 1949 liquor was banned in Bombay, and enterprising Aunties deftly served drinks from their front rooms, a boiled egg vendor stationed outside as a sign for those who knew. By the 1970s the law was loosened up, and permit holders (having obtained their liquor permits ‘for the preservation or maintenance of health’ no less) could buy alcohol. Permit Rooms were officially born.
To eat...
At Permit Room, there’s round-the-clock deliciousness. Breakfast Naans and Marmalade Mimosas kick-start the day. Lunch is light, or long: fresh Salads, crispy Chaats and maybe some Chicken Pick-Me-Ups for the afternoon.
Picky-snacky-crunchy Chakli and Peanut Masala are delicious with local beers. Then wrap your teeth around select Dishoom favourites with a side of Chilli Butter-Bhutta. Stay for late-night cocktails and Sweets Things too.
PERMIT ROOM SPECIALS
JACKFRUIT BERRY PULAO
(Ve) .............................................Riffing on a recipe from Bombay’s Britannia & Co. – but we use luscious jackfruit – with onion tomato, jaggery and whole spices, under a heap of saffron pulao rice studded with barberries and sultanas. Could be a group thing.
HALF / WHOLE CHICKEN TANDOORI
..............................Something special is going on here: marinated spatchcock is not coloured red. It is grilled and served with fresh kachumber, tangy green chutney and charred lemon to squeeze.
