Welcome to Permit Room Oxford

Step into our new spot on Trinity Street, Cambridge – a tribute to 1970s Bombay.

Bricked freshly into New Inn Hall St, our latest All-Day Bar-Café is officially open – breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails! Packed with Bombay delight. Ready for you to kick back, every day of the week.

Suns up, walk-in. Slip into your favourite table, back against the wall, coffee hot and smelling good. Breakfast is morning glory. Bacon Naan Rolls, wrestler-sized portions, spiced eggs and pau, sausages, fruits and Bun Maska. Marmalade Mimosa – a golden cure for the night before. Lunch is light, or long. Snacks, Chaats, Salads, maybe a Chicken Pick-Me-Up for afternoon picking. Dip, dunk, demolish. Polish off another. Then tuck into an evening of revelry. Nibbly bits, crispy bites, A Spicy Chicken Puff. Mouth-dripping curries and Dishoom faves. Finish with a Mango Lassi Soft Serve (drip some more).

At the centre is the bar, awash with Highballs, Short & Boozy, Twisted Classics – they pack a punch (and you’re thirsty). Drinks shake up the spirit here, expertly crafted. Eyes flit between the Feni Martini – crisp and icy – or the Thums Up Sazerac – warming and bold. On Monday, the Sober-Negroni. Just a thought…

New to the neighbourhood, maybe. But full of things from nearby-people. Sip rich coffee from New Ground – ethically sourced and roasted with conviction, just down the road. The Earth Ale X Permit Room Gose is a special collab – loud streaks of rhubarb and a hint of fig leaf.

Look around. Walls sage green. Art everywhere. Oxford and South Asian talent hang proud. Big, small, bright and eclectic prints. Paintings – energetic and alive. Every seat, a different view (you chose wisely). To your right, a cascade of frames filled with colour, cubes and psychedelic symmetry. Illustrated figures swim in pools on white plates. “Don’t feed the cats!” shouts a poster.

To your left, a bowl of eggs (https://www.instagram.com/robcramp/) – your guess is right. A nod to the Aunty Bars of Bombay, where enterprising Aunties deftly served alcohol from their front rooms during prohibition. A boiled egg vendor stationed outside as a signal for those who knew. By the 1970s the law was loosened up, and these bars became Permit Rooms. Let’s raise our glass.

Night sets in, lights dim and vibes quicken. It’s your turn to select a song on the jukebox – your friends are pointing! Rootsy beats fill the air, nice choice. Every Thursday, resident DJs spin their favourite vinyls, evening ’til late. Sip another cocktail. Feet tap, spirits lift. Now you’re dancing.

Come for a good time and a long time. Whatever the hour or craving, Permit Room is open to all. Explore Permit Room.
